Make alterations to your home
If you want to make alterations to your home or garden, you must get written permission from us first.
You can't make alterations if you have a non-secure tenancy. You can only make decorative changes.
Examples of alternations that need our permission
- laying hardwood, laminate or ceramic flooring
- changing kitchen cupboard doors
- installing a new boiler
- altering the layout of a property
- refitting kitchens or bathrooms
- adding conservatories or sheds
- altering or adding garden fencing
- rewiring
- removing chimney breasts
Some alterations will need planning permission. You may also need building control. You will need to apply and pay for these.
Apply for home alterations permission
You need to contact your Housing Officer to ask for permission to make alterations to your home.
You must not start any work until you have received our permission.
If you make any alterations without our permission, you’re in breach of the terms and conditions of your tenancy agreement. We may ask you to undo the work.
What happens next?
We’ll review your request and make a decision. We’ll let you know in writing within 28 days.
If we give you permission, we may add conditions such as allowing us to inspect the work.
If we refuse permission to do the work, we’ll write to you to explain the reasons.
