Sheltered housing
Sheltered housing can help vulnerable people to live independently. You have a secure tenancy and a self-contained flat.
Sheltered housing usually includes:
- your own front door and freedom to come and go as you please
- support from scheme manager (also known as a warden) who can help you to access services
- a 24-hour emergency help through an alarm system
- social activities
- communal areas such as gardens and lounges
It’s possible to find sheltered housing to rent or to buy.
If you're not ready to move into sheltered housing, you can find support to help you live independently in your own home or consider moving to extra care housing
Who can apply?
You can apply for sheltered housing if you:
- are over 55
- feel your current home is no longer suitable
- need help and support to continue to live independently
Cost of sheltered housing
The cost depends on whether you rent or buy, the housing scheme you choose and the services available.
You can get an idea of the cost by contacting the sheltered housing you’re interested in.
You may also be able to get housing benefit which can help towards the cost of the housing.
How to apply
You need to join Redbridge Council’s housing register. You’ll need to do this on the Choice Homes UK website.
You’ll need internet access.

Apply through a housing association
You can apply directly to the housing association.
What happens next
We’ll check your application to see whether it’s suitable and a priority for sheltered housing.
We may need to visit you in your home.
We’ll ask you to provide:
- proof of identification such as your passport, medical card and birth certificate
- proof of income
- proof of address for the last five years
- your medical situation
