Home improvement grants

We can offer grants to help you fix and improve your home.

Disabled Adaptions Grant

You could get a grant if you’re disabled and need to make changes to your home.

You might need to:

  • make it easier to get in and out of the home. For example, widen doors or install ramps or grab rails
  • making it easier to move around inside. For example, with a stairlift
  • providing suitable bathroom and toilet facilities

You can get up to £30,000.

You must apply for this grant before starting any work. The grant cannot be used for work already in progress or completed.

Who can apply

It does not matter if you own the property, rent the property, or live in a council home.

You can apply if (all must apply to you):

  • you or someone in your home has a disability
  • changes are needed to help with your disability, and these are possible in your home
  • you live at your home for at least five years after the work is done

You’ll need to pass a means test for grants over £19,000. This is a test to find out if you have enough money to qualify for help.

Children with disabilities do not need to pass a means test.

How to apply

You’ll need to get an assessment from an occupational therapist first. They’ll assess what changes you need to your home.

Once your assessment has been completed, you can apply for the Disabled Adaptions Grant.

Relocation Grant

If we cannot improve your home, we may be able to provide support for you to:

  • relocate to more suitable accommodation
  • pay for moving costs
  • pay for utility connection costs or fees for services provided by approved organisations
  • pay for lawyer or real estate agent fees

You can get up to £10,000. You can get this help only once every 10 years.

You do not need to pass a means test. This is a test to find out if you have enough money to qualify for help.

You cannot apply for this grant directly. It’s offered as an alternative to Disabled Facilities Grant when the home cannot be adapted.

Empty Property Grant

The empty property grant offers owners help to carry out repairs to bring the property back into use.

The property must be empty for more than six months.
