Check you can apply for homeless help
Anyone who finds themselves homeless or at risk of homelessness can ask us for help.
It’s important that you ask for help as soon as you can. You should not wait to become homeless before asking for help.
The level of help we can offer depends on your individual circumstances. If you’re subject to immigration control the help that’s offered may be limited to advice and information.

At your appointment
It’s likely we’ll book you an appointment to meet with us.
Your appointment will last about two hours.
We’ll:
- ask you about your situation
- talk to you about what housing options you have
- help you make a personal housing plan
Your personal housing plan is an agreement between you and the council.
It’ll say:
- the steps we’ll take to resolve your housing issues
- what you should do
What to bring to your appointment
You’ll need to bring the following:
- identity documents for you and your household. This should be your UK passport or birth certificate
- your address history for the last five years
- proof of income and any savings, for example pay slips or income support documents
- medical information if you have health problems
- proof of your immigration or residence status from the Home Office if you are not a British or Irish citizen
If you do not have a passport or ID documents, we’ll check your immigration or residence status.
We may need to rebook your appointment if you do not bring your documents.
If you’re not a British or Irish citizen
Everyone is entitled to homeless assistance. But what help we can give you depends on your immigration or residence status.
